Inhibition of medial VSMC DNA synthesis by ADV-tk/+GC Rat carotid arteries were infected with 2 × 109 pfu of ADV-tk for 5 min immediately following balloon injury. Animals were treated for 3 days with systemic ganciclovir (ADV-tk/+GC) or saline (ADV-tk/ -GC) administered by intraperitoneal injection beginning 24 hr after balloon injury and adenovirus infection. Medial VSMC proliferation was measured by BrdU incorporation between 2 and 4 days after balloon injury and adenovirus infection.
