In nondiabetics (a), immunofluorescence is weak and localized to the ganglion cell layer (white arrowhead) and processes extending through the inner nuclear layer (white arrow). In diabetics, immunofluorescence is more intense, and extends in a Muller cell-like distribution from the ganglion cell layer to the outer nuclear layer. (Original magnification: 400×.)
