  1. The cohort was stratified by age, hemoglobin type or HLA Bw53 type. No. of positive smears refers to the number of samples with thick blood smears positive for P. falciparum asexual or sexual stages by microscopic examination. No. PCR+ refers to the number of individuals who had a positive PCR for the locus considered. Total No. of bands refers to the sum of PCR fragments detected in all samples for the locus considered. No. of bands/carrier indicates the average number of distinct alleles detected per PCR-positive isolate. Individual MSP-1 and MSP-2 alleles were identified as indicated in Materials and Methods.
