Hippocampal volume correlates with CA1 cell number in the damaged and undamaged hemisphere following neonatal H-I in mice. (A) Following unilateral (left) carotid ligation and exposure to hypoxia at P7, the number of CA1 neurons and the hippocampal volume in the right and left hippocampus of bax +/− (N = 5) and bax −/− (N = 5) mice were determined. The number of CA1 neurons correlated well with the hippocampal volume for bax +/− and bax −/− mice (r2 = 0.75, p = 0.017). (B) The percent loss in CA1 neurons correlated well with the percent loss of hippocampal volume (r2 = 0.52, p = 0.019). (C) There were more CA1 neurons in the injured hippocampus of randomly selected bax −/− vs. bax +/− mice (N = 5 per group). The difference was not significant due to the small number of animals in each group assessed in this fashion.
