Table 1 Activities of catalase and superoxide dismutase in rat, mouse, and human pancreatic islets

From: Differences in the Expression of Heat-Shock Proteins and Antioxidant Enzymes between Human and Rodent Pancreatic Islets: Implications for the Pathogenesis of Insulin-Dependent Diabetes Mellitus

Catalase (pkat/mg protein)

Superoxide Dismutase (mU/µg protein)

Rat islets

122 ± 3.2 (4)

7.3 ± 0.6 (4)

Mouse islets

19.4 ± 3.9 (4)a

3.2 ± 0.5 (4)b

Human islets

197 ± 11.6 (5)a

9.1 ± 1.7 (5)

  1. Rat, mouse, and human islets were precultured for 5–8 days in RPMI 1640 containing 11.1 (mouse and rat) or 5.6 mM glucose (human). Groups of 200–300 islets were taken for enzyme activity determination as given in Materials and Methods. Results are given as means ± SEM, with the number of experiments in parentheses. ap < 0.001 and bp < 0.01 when comparing with rat islets using Student’s t test.
