  1. β-cell area is the percentage of insulin-positive area relative to that of total pancreas area determined at day 1 neonatally or 6 months of age for CBA control or Shb transgenic mice. The labeling index values are percent insulin-positive cells with nuclei that have incorporated [3H]-thymidine of animals injected with the isotope at 3 months of age.
