From: Butyrate Switches the Pattern of Chemokine Secretion by Intestinal Epithelial Cells through Histone Acetylation

Butyrate switches the secretion of IL-8 and MCP-1 by intestinal epithelial (Caco-2) cells. Butyrate was given 14 days after plating and supernatants were collected after 48 hr. IL-8 and MCP-1 were measured by ELISA. Caco-2 cells constitutively secrete MCP-1 but not IL-8. In cells incubated with butyrate, there is an increase in IL-8 secretion (p < 0.0001) while secretion of MCP-1 is decreased (p < 0.001). Bars represent standard deviations of three wells for each point. The data are representative of five experiments.
