  1. M, male; F, female. B cells, CD19+ lymphocytes among peripheral blood lymphocytes (nl = 5.7–15.3%). CD4/8 ratio = ratio of CD4+ CD8+ lymphocytes (nl = 1.5–2.5). Hb = hemoglobin (nl = 12–16 gm/dl [female], 14–18 gm/dl [male]). MCV, mean corpuscular volume (nl = 83–99 mm3), α/β ratio, ratio of β to β globin synthesis in reticulocytes (nl = 0.90–1.10, established in our laboratory by study of reticulocyte enriched aliquots (7) of 30 nonanemic, nonmicrocytic subjects).
