Contribution of XIST in XCI. XIST coats the chromosome and mediates various aspects of XIC, including elimination of RNA polymerases from DNA, removal of the active histone modifications from the chromosome, inclusion of the repressive histone modifications into the chromosome, methylation of DNA and tethering of the inactive X chromosome to the nuclear periphery.
