Temperature dependence of cold-induced mitochondrial fission. Porcine aortic endothelial cells (A) were incubated for 48 h at 4 °C (B), 10 °C (C), 15 °C (D), 21 °C (E) and 25 °C (F). MitoTracker Red-stained mitochondria were documented by fluorescence microscopy (λexc. = 546 ± 6 nm, λem. ≥ 590 nm). Representative figures of n = 4 experiments. For quantification (G) cells were categorised in cells with predominantly short, intermediate or long mitochondria by a person blinded to the experiment. Warm/rewarming conditions are shown hatched.
