Vascular density in HEK and HEK-VEGF nodules. Blood vessels in control (A,C) and glucose-treated CAM (B,D) were labeled with monoclonal antibody to desmin 3 d after grafting. A dense network of new blood vessels is observed in the control CAM after (A) HEK- and (C) HEK-VEGF-grafting. In contrast, in glucose-treated CAM, only (D) HEK-VEGF, not (B) HEK, nodules are highly vascularized. Immunostained vessels were scanned, automatically measured and the vascular density was scored (E). Grey bars: HEK; white bars: HEK-VEGF.
