Calm caging and behavior in the EPM test. At d 42 we used an EPM (see Materials and Methods) to assess behavioral changes in mice housed in each of the four caging conditions (A-C). (A) Calm animals spent less percent time in open arms of the EPM than Cntl and Cntl Ex animals (not significant). (B) Percent time spent in the closed arms was similar in all groups. (C) Cntl, Calm and Calm Ex mice traveled similar mean distances during EPM observation, whereas Cntl Ex animals traveled a greater mean distance (not significant) compared with the other groups (data expressed as distance traveled per animal/mean distance traveled by Cntl animals). Data represented as mean ± SEM.
