Dose-response of isolated mitochondria to UCB- and Aβ peptide-induced swelling. Mitochondria were isolated and incubated with either no addition (control), unconjugated bilirubin (UCB; 0.9, 4.3, and 8.6 µM), or amyloid-β (Aβ) peptide (2535) (63 and 125 µM) in respiration buffer as described in “Materials and Methods.” At 5 min, the apoptotic agent was added and the decrease in absorbance at 540 nm was monitored for an additional 5 min-period. The results are means ± standard error of the mean (SEM) of at least three separate experiments.
