The proposed disulfide pattern, oli-gomerization, and overall morphology of SP-A. SH denotes free cysteine residues, followed by a number to show their position in the polypeptide, except for SHI, which represents all the cysteine residues in the N-terminal segment. The disulphide pattern is based on the presence of both the α2 and α3 chains in each SP-A molecule, which allows the optimum pairing of all the cysteine residues involved. Based on Lu and Sim (13).
