  1. ACE activity was measured against the synthetic substrate 3H-hippuryl-glycylglycine (3H-HGG) and corrected by the total protein in plasma or exudate (nmol/min/mg protein). One unit of ACE activity (U) is defined as the amount of enzyme required to release one µmole of hippuric acid per minute per liter. Representative data are expressed as mean ± S.D.(n = 8 per group). P values were determined using Student’s t-test. Within LEW/N rats: carrageenan versus salinea p = 0.0090,c p < 0.0001. Within F344/N rats: carrageenan versus salineb, e p < 0.0001.
