Hypoxia stimulates IL-8 protein secretion. Human macrophages cultured for 2 hours secreted significantly greater IL-8 than normoxic controls (n = 9, P < 0.02). The increase was similar to that seen with 2 hours incubation with (10 ng/ml) and TNF-α (10 ng/ml), but significantly less than that induced by LPS (1 µg/ml) (n > 4, P < 0.01).
