Butyrate regulated chemokine secretion in epithelial cells stimulated with LPS. Cells received butyrate 14 days after plating. After butyrate had been added for 24 hr, LPS (100 µg/ml) was added for a further 24 hr. LPS alone had no effect on the secretion of chemokines in Caco-2 cells. However, in the presence of butyrate, IL-8 secretion was markedly increased (p < 0.0001) whereas MCP-1 secretion decreased (p < 0.002). Bars represent standard deviations of three different wells for each point. The data are representative of five experiments.
