Protection from apoptosis by p21WAF1. Inducible p21WAF1-vector (IWAF) cells were induced by p21WAF1 inducer (IPTG) to express p21WAF1 or uninduced (medium) for 24 hr. Cells were subsequently exposed to 100 µM etoposide for 48 hr, after which viability was assessed by trypan blue exclusion (Fig. 3A, n = 3). Apoptosis was demonstrated by fragmentation of genomic DNA after the addition of IPTG, etoposide, or both as indicated.
