Cell viability in response to cytokines. (A) Isolated islets were cultured for 30 hr in the absence or presence of 50 U/ml of IL-1β + 1000 U/ml of IFN-γ. The islets were then stained with propidium iodide and Hoechst stain; necrotic-like and apoptotic-like cells were counted. (B) Nitrite formation from 50 islets incubated for 24 hr with or without cytokines was determined in incubation media.
