Recombinant MIF (rMIF) treatment increases the mRNA expression of several genes known to be upregulated in cancerous tissue. In particular, two isoforms of VEGF (165 and 121; lanes 1 and 2) and metalloproteinase-9 (lanes 5 and 6), but not metalloproteinase-2 (lanes 3 and 4), were upregulated in LoVo colorectal cells treated with rMIF (250 ng/mL, 24 h; even-numbered lanes) relative to parallel vehicle treatment (odd-numbered lanes).
